Introduction

Logging Roads have a heavy a toll on Congo Basin forests. When poorly managed, roads provide access for a host of the impacts beyond just logging. Previously remote forest risks being opened to illegal poaching as well as slash and burn agriculture. This will exacerbate the extirpation of wildlife from the Congo Basin forest and render forests more vulnerable to clearance and conversion. The recent discovery of the world's largest peatland in the Congo Basin forest, has added new climate risks to logging in region with 30 billion tonnes of buried carbon.

Logging Tasks

The tasks selected fall within Congo Basin Forest Partnership Facility Landscapes - regions critical for biodiversity conservation, indigenous peoples, and climate change mitigation. We have selected areas where logging has been active with the last year. Using the latest imagery from Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2, we have identified areas where logging continues to expand.

By tracing Logging Roads, we can track and quantify the new roads and add them to a global and consistent database.

When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".

Imagery

Use the most recent imagery to look for new roads. The newest imagery is Sentinel-2 2017Q1, however it may not be available in all areas. Mapathon participants also have access to a Landsat imagery analysis layer that highlights newer roads, more information will be provided.

A number of overlay layers are available if you scroll down to the bottom of the layers list in iD editor. These may help with context if you are looking for additional locations to map.

Roads

You will normally add logging roads using the "Logging Road" preset in iD editor. However it is important to preserve the local street hierarchy. If the road is a larger road, connecting villages or towns, it may be better to tag it as a minor/unclassified road. Also if you are updating existing roads (by adding additional nodes) be careful not to change the type of road. Instead, you can go to the All Tags in iD and manually add a start_date tag. More information on tagging roads can be found at: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Highway_Tag_Africa
